"What’s your #1 goal concerning your dissertation?” I ask my prospective clients. First, they try to say the “right” thing, to guess what he wants to hear. But then some answer, “You know what? I’m going to be honest with you. I just want to get the d@#n thing done!”
If that’s you, then you need Fast-Track Your Dissertation. In this book you’ll discover that Fast-Tracking Your Dissertation is nothing to be embarrassed about. Finishing what you started is a good thing! Unfortunately, you, your university, and society at-large have created a whole landfill of head trash designed to keep you from changing your first name to Doctor.
With this book you’ll blast through the obstacles that are getting in your way so that you can Fast-Track Your Dissertation and, like my own doctoral students, slash a year or more off your time to graduation!
Who Is this Book For
Fast-Track Your Dissertation is for unconventional, adult doctoral students, particularly those studying in the areas of business, education, nursing, psychology, and other professional social sciences. What make a student "unconventional?" Dr. Russell Strickland describes it this way:
"Traditional doctoral students are twenty-something year-old kids who went straight from high school to college to their doctoral studies. A traditional doctoral student's goal is to become a research professor. For this type of student, the dissertation is very important. It forms the basis for their professional research program, an arc the nascent researcher could pursue for decades throughout their career.
"In contrast, an unconventional doctoral student is an adult in their 30s, 40s, 50s, or 60s. This student has an accomplished career but also carries a myriad of additional adult responsibilities: a spouse, family, mortgage, church, and civic commitments. The unconventional doctoral student adds grad school to an already hectic schedule primarily to level-up or switch tracks in their career. They may want to hang out a shingle as a coach, consultant, or counselor. They may want to teach at the college or graduate level. Perhaps they are preparing for a 'retirement career.' Whatever the case, for an unconventional doctoral student, the dissertation itself is not important; it is merely a degree requirement, an obstacle to graduation. For this student, the goal should be to strip away the majesty and mystique of the dissertation and just get the damn thing done!”
So, if you want to be a research professor when you grow up, this book is not really for you. Sure, it's a fun read. And, you may gain insights which will prove valuable when you are advising your own unconventional doctoral students in the future. But, fast-tracking your dissertation simply isn't your goal.
But, if the idea of spending years on your dissertation, adding tens of thousands of dollars to your tuition bills, and delaying your post-graduate aspirations indefinitely resonates with you about as well as fingernails screeching across a chalkboard (do they still use chalkboards?), then you need to Fast-Track Your Dissertation!
